The door to Rebecca’s bedchamber was shut, which didn’t surprise him. She was probably hoping he wouldn’t show up, but he couldn’t grant her such a reprieve.

He opened the door. The curtains were drawn closed, but the candles were lit. Rebecca was sitting on her bed, gulping down a glass of wine as if her life depended on it.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

With a playful shrug, she said, “I was scared.”

“Scared?”

“My aunt told me it was painful. She said she cried her first time. Mary said otherwise, but I don’t know what it’ll be like for me.”

He nodded. “I think I understand now.”

He stepped nearer still, bringing them at once entirely too close together and not nearly close enough. The torchlight danced in his eyes and bathed his skin in a warm, golden glow. He looked . . . determined. Decided. But not altogether sure of himself.

Instead of releasing her hand, he raised it to his lips and placed a soft, gentle kiss to her knuckles. Awareness raced down her back in a flurry of gooseflesh—he had never done such a thing before.

When he lifted his head, his gaze flicked to just over her shoulder before meeting hers.

“Do you trust me?” There was an edge to his voice that wasn’t there moments earlier.

“Should I?” She didn’t know what he was asking, but she knew instinctually that it was important.

“Probably not.”

A ghost of a smile slipped over her lips. “Then you should not ask it of me.”

He unlaced her fingers from her wineglass and placed it on the nightstand. He looked back at her, his fingers lifting to brush her cheek.

“Whatever am I to do with you?”

“My dear Rebecca,” he murmured, his eyes burning into her soul.

Rebecca could not answer and, when his lips pressed against hers, she felt herself melt into his arms. She let him draw her head back and angle her towards him, feeling as though she were clay in the hands of a master potter.

Heat seared her skin as she wound her hands around his neck and, as he began to pull the pins from her hair, Sophie drew him closer, not wanting this moment to end.

To have such a depth of feeling over a woman was not something Robert had ever come across. His women had been used for their bodies only, something with which he could take his pleasure and then discard.

With Rebecca it was not so. He admired her. Her loveliness of both face and character continued to pull him in, even though he was trying his best to resist. But that he could not seem to do.

Having seen the light in her eyes, the pink of her cheeks and the darting of her gaze towards his lips, Robert had taken a chance and given in to his feelings. Hauling her into her arms, he had pressed gentle kisses to her mouth, and she returned them with equal fervor.

It was clear she lacked experience with a man, but that shy vulnerability made his heart soar.
